Post-Mortem
On Saturday, December 8, 2018, some MODX Cloud customers with sites hosted on our Texas 2 platform (paas2.tx.modxcloud.com) were affected by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the platform. Because it was such a small subset of customers and the server was not triggering any alerts, we could not immediately determine the cause of the issue.
Our infrastructure partner, IBM Cloud, has hardware and software in place to protect against these types of incidents. In some cases, these protections themselves can block legitimate network traffic (inbound and outbound) during an attack in progress.
The attack activity spanned several hours and the protections worked, which meant the server remained online, and most sites were available to visitors.
We apologize to those customers this event affected.
